When You Feel Low
03:16
|
|
||
When you feel awful low
And you've got nowhere to go
You can turn to me
I’m the one who will understand
Because I know times are tough
I’ve been there before
We’re doing the best we can
But it still ain’t good enough
It’s the shock of the perspective
When you hear it from above
When you see it amplified
That’ll leave you feeling dumb
But that was last month’s party
Got a new friend now
I’ll hug you and feed you and love you and need you
When you’re down

Twenty-Three Retiree
04:27
|
|
||
Retired at age twenty-three
I know it sounds funny but I’m a retiree
And damn it feels good to be free
Retired at age twenty-three
My friends are all making their way
Playing a game with a ball and a chain
Saving their pay for their 401k
But by that time they've got a foot in the grave
Me I own my own property
I've got a couple of acres of orchards of trees
A big southern porch where I brew my sweet tea
Retired at age twenty-three
Well you’re probably wondering how
How much inheritance it took to get out
But I was not born with a spoon in my mouth
I got here all by myself
But things ain’t always what they seem
You can check out my orchard at the local library
And my porch is printed with the news of the week
There’s only one ingredient in my tea recipe
So don’t go behaving like me
Or you’ll end up all alone in the middle of the street
Down in the gutter with the rats and the fleas
When you retire at the ripe young age of twenty-three

One in the Chamber
04:42
|
|
||
My brain is made of paper mâché
But a black baseball bat
Has two eyes in the back of my head
I feel the rain run down my face
Shook hands with a snake
Said big man no not today
I never want to go back
Think I’d rather have a heart attack
I found my own sound
Think I ought to play it out loud right now
When I grow up I want to be a painter
Still got one in the chamber
And I ain’t talking ‘bout lead
So don’t go acting so goddam self-righteous
We all want to be an artist
All want to hit it out of the park
I never want to go back
Think I’d rather have a heart attack
I found my own sound
Think I ought to play it out loud right now

Something Cannot Change
04:01
|
|
||
Buckle up it’s a brand-new day
Paint a smile on your face
All alone you can meditate
There is something you cannot change
Standing there in your underwear
Looking through the windowpane
At flashing light of evergreen
A whisper from a far-off train
No warmth and no horizon
Up here the water’s cold
So wash your hands go on sanitize it
What are we but garden gnomes?
Climb the hill come on quick
Last one up is an Easter Egg
Dyed inside a treasure chest
Inside a box you cannot get in
Bought a ticket way out to Seattle
Borrow horseshoe from my neighbor’s stable
Lucky day when I get to see her
But can you hear?

Who Drank My Beer?
03:20
|
|
||
Who drank all of my Stag?
Who wrecked my old Chevrolet?
Blew up the airbag and drove into a ditch
When I find him I’ll kill me that son of a bitch
Who wrote this old country song?
It sounds so familiar; I’ve heard it before
It likely came in on my radio dial
On my way back down from Southern Ohio
But I reckon I know who it was
The same man who hurt the one that I love
The same man who drank all of my beer
I saw him reflected in my rearview mirror
Now I am home safe and sound
Who has more angels than one man can count?
Who’s up to admit that he ain’t no saint?
I saw him this morning while I was brushing my teeth

The Rainbow Ranch
03:54
|
|
||
My heart was red as an heirloom tomato
Rusted and orange like an old sweet potato
But don’t call me a coward, I ain’t never yellow
I know life on the ranch is a life with each other
When you’re green with envy, your heart’ll go sour
You’ll turn as blue as the bank of the river
Meanwhile I’m violet like a Hibiscus flower
I know life on the ranch is a life full of color
So I dig for buried treasure with a shovel made of gold
Chase down your rainbow inside a kaleidoscope
I cannot see the forest for the color on the leaves
Well you already got everything that I need
You say you want one a bit more straightforward
How about I love you and I will forever
You say you want one a bit less black and white
But I’m only out of Kansas when you’re by my side
