Pick Me Up
03:10
|

how often do you see
a young child being carried
away from all the misery
a different place where they'll be happy
when they grow up they'll tell me
I best ought to quit behaving
start acting like a man
pick me up give me a hand
could have sworn I'd picked up one
but empty handed I leave with none
ever since we changed the clocks
we have had to wait to cross
none of my friends seem to want to stop
it's time to start getting pissed off
throw a fit and quit your job
pick my nose and go take a walk

Ugly

I live in a house shaped like disgusting
with a sign out front that says ugly
or maybe just vacant or no public restroom
or maybe there's no sign at all
you live in a mansion despite no ambition
all day on the computer
spoon fed your ego you're perfectly fruitless
weak and misguided without purpose
destiny is real but she walks on a leash
goes wherever she please
destiny is real but she wears a steering wheel
take her where you please
fuck off you half-breeds you no-shows and pansies
dandies and divas full of confusion
made for each other like David and Goliath
swing your partner around
if you ever wonder what I think we might become
decisions make me anxious I'll just play dumb
when push comes to shove and you're left with just memory
you and you're friend at the party
destiny is real but she walks on a leash
goes wherever she please
destiny is real but she wears a steering wheel
take her where you please

Dairy Queen

4 5 6
in Indianapolis Indiana
passing a Dairy Queen
the greatest of all
as if to fulfill this prophecy
because you have a backbone
you are a vertebrate
we have no name
we have no interest in religion
are you ready?
his wealth helped him gain political power
there is no noise
there is no sound

Dream

climb ten flights of stairs towards the headache brigade
they're all standing guard discussing the battles they've been in
ask for directions and they point me towards the yard
past the house over near the fence
major says take that there path until you hit the patch in the grass
there's a little gap it's a box you can slide down in
climb down the hole to a lobby down below
with a jukebox four doors and scarlet trim
this is a song about dream
sometimes it can feel overwhelming
hold me tight it's gonna be fine
you've got lots of dreams
that got nothing to do with owning thing
more like catching feeling
the kind that makes you wanna sing
take door number four to a hallway with hardwood floors
great big window overlooks a train station
steam engine pulls in just as thunderstorm begins
I reckon I best take the door at the other end
as soon as I get to the otherside I'm in a gymnasium
a crowd full of people waiting for me to give a speech
I get a bit nervous and head back to wear I came from but it's changed
I'm at a state fair with my friend three tickets to ride the ferris wheel
this is a song about dream
sometimes it can feel overwhelming
hold me tight it's gonna be fine
you've got lots of dreams
that got nothing to do with owning thing
more like catching feeling
the kind that makes you wanna sing

Candlestick

ain't no picture all framed in gold
ain't no love to call you're own
ain't no prayer gonna save your soul
this ain't a picture all framed in gold
this here road don't lead back home
ain't no heaven like you been told
ain't no after life at all
paradise is already full
surrounded by people dying to know
whether or not they're all alone
well truth be told I'm sick of it
ain't no endless candlestick
ain't to say there ain't no flame
life and death they ain't the same
life is filled with lots of pain
ain't no reason to be ashamed
ain't to say there ain't no point
plenty of things in life to enjoy
plenty of things in life to avoid
separate the melody from the noise

well we pull into the cul-de-sac just as my friend's telling me he'd be a chain smoker if it weren't so expensive. I guess I agree and put the van in park outside this big yellow house that looks a little bit to me like a god damn sunflower barn. We're just following orders when we bypass the front door, round the corner, and as per instructions head towards the backyard. First thing I see is a trampoline and a ziploc bag that's full of weed and three beautiful women staring up at me and I think to myself that heaven just might be right here in upstate New York.
There's two of us and three of them and I can't help but shoot a look over to my friend who's swaying there with a little grin while the girls stand up quit sunbathing long enough for a proper introduction. My sudden exlaim that I've always had a thing for soft As bring an appropriate exchange of eyebrows raised after they tell me their names which are leah and eva and hannah. Thank god I'm saved by the radio that starts playing music as hannah produces two chairs and opens two beers and asks us when exactly we'd like to take the grand tour. I say right now sounds fine that'd be nice so we're led inside to a room painted white with delicate heirlooms and women's rights books and a fuzzy pink rug and a mirror and neither of us have ever felt more like a rodeo bull stuck in a china shop.
